Project ReCharge is a hands-on project-based STEAM curriculum and training program that engages students, teachers and facility staff. This interactive energy education program provides valuable professional development and classroom resources to teachers, who then empower middle school and high school students to become energy detectives focused on saving their school money through energy efficiency proposals.  Innovative lessons, energy data and interactive dashboards engage students and teachers as they learn about energy generation, consumption and efficiency. Project ReCharge focuses on real-world learning and application that has measurable impact on students, the environment and the community at large.

Project ReCharge Partners

  • Envirolution is a Reno nonprofit organization focusing on green and sustainable economic development through innovative education. As the developers of Project ReCharge, Envirolution is responsible for developing curriculum content, managing involvement of energy-monitoring technology, and providing classroom assistance to teachers.
  • The Washoe County School District has been an active partner since the program’s inception in 2009 and continues to be instrumental in introducing the program to local middle school and high schools.
  • Envirolution’s funding partners for the 2019-2020 school year are Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy (NGOE), Tesla, NV Energy Foundation, Arconic Foundation, and the William H. Moffat Jr. Foundation enabling us to partner with 7 new schools.
  • Over the next 3-5 years, Project ReCharge plans to partner with 20 new schools, provide training, curriculum and classroom resources to 100 new teachers, engage 15,000 new students and assist in the development and implementation of dozens more student proposals that can save school districts thousands in energy costs.

What We Do

Hands-On Project-Based STEAM Curriculum

All participating teachers collaborate with Project ReCharge staff in training and professional development sessions. Teachers review all materials before instruction and aid Project ReCharge staff in enhancing classroom lessons for diverse student populations.

Collaborative Teacher Training and Professional Development

Project ReCharge melds project-based Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum with hands-on activities in inspiring students to action in their communities. This curriculum is available for download and all materials made available to participating teachers.

Energy Detectives & Student Derived Solutions

Students apply skills learned through the Project ReCharge curriculum in identifying and solving energy problems within their schools and communities. The Washoe County School District and Climate Action for Schools financed the upgrades recommended in 6 student efficiency proposals cutting energy use by 1,400 megawatt hours each year and resulting in an annual saving of approximately $174,000.

History of Project ReCharge

Project ReCharge is a unique program that transforms the way school energy savings are achieved. Created in 2009 by Envirolution, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization focused on driving the growth of a sustainable economy through youth education and community engagement, Project ReCharge bridges the gap between school districts, utility companies, government agencies and community organizations. In 2014, Envirolution partnered with the University of Nevada Reno and thanks to Grant DRL-1433597 from the National Science Foundation, Project ReCharge invested $1.2 million over three years in energy efficiency education in Northern Nevada. In 2017, a Nevada Department of Education Math/Science Partnership Grant was secured, enabling Project ReCharge to move into 11 new schools in 2 new school districts, training 28 new teachers and reaching almost 2,000 students for the 2017-2018 school year. In 2018, Tesla made an initial investment of $262,700 in Project ReCharge as part of a multi-year plan to expand Project ReCharge across Nevada. Since 2015, Project ReCharge has provided 117 middle and high-school teachers with over 6,000+ hours of professional development, giving them over $200,000 in classroom resources which has allowed them to engage over 30,000 students in 40 schools across 9 school districts in the Northern Nevada & California.
